April Bailey

Honorific Prefix

Dr

I'm Lecturer of Psychology and lead the BIAS Lab research group. I use methods from social and cognitive psychology alongside tools from computational linguistics to study questions about social groups. Much of my work focuses on gender as well as its intersection with other identities (e.g., race and sexual orientation).

Research interests

Androcentrism, gender and language, social cognition.

Current projects

In one line of work my group investigates foundational human concepts such as the idea of a "person."  In theory this concept includes everyone, but we find that it prioritizes men and White people over other social groups. In a current project, we're investigating how this bias emerges and varies across 100 different languages worldwide.
