GENDER.ED’s 5th year celebration: The Annual Research Showcase

GENDER.ED’s Annual Research Showcase returned completely in person for the first time since the pandemic and was an opportunity to learn about cutting-edge gender and sexualities research projects and initiatives at the University of Edinburgh. This year was also a celebration of GENDER.ED’s five year anniversary!

We showcased an exhilarating and diverse collection of work from across schools and disciplines. Here are some of the highlights from the event:

Dr. Radhika Govinda kicks off with the Director’s Report

Dr. Govinda shared the highlights of GENDER.ED’s key activities and achievements over the last five years and reflected on the progress made over this time. She also examined possible future directions for GENDER.ED and we would love for you to help shape this by filling out the GENDER.ED Stakeholder Survey and letting your feedback guide our feminist work!

Feminist Trailblazer’s Award:

Dr. Govinda also announced the winners of the GENDER.ED-EUSA UG Feminist Trailblazers, a series that recognises excellent feminist research, advocacy and activist work being carried out by the University of Edinburgh’s undergraduate students. The winners were:

1st: Sharessa Naidoo

2nd: Aarti Mukhedkar

3rd: Maggie Lin

Honourable mentions: Hope Conway-Gebbie & Sara Khatun Guluzade (who joined us online to receive the award!)

Reflective Roundtable on Doing Gender and Sexualities Research

Following this, there was a roundtable discussion chaired by Prof. Meryl Kenny (seated at the far left) on “Feminist, Women’s and Gender Studies at Edinburgh: Looking Back, Looking Forward” (L-R) Featuring Lynn Jamieson, Radhika Govinda, Sharon Cowan and Merlin Seller. They engaged in thought-provoking reflections and discussions on the past, present and future of this work in the academy.

The attendees were then invited to walk around the room engage with a wonderful collection of interactive project tables and poster sessions. Here are some glimpses of these abundantly educative presentations!
