Jaime Garcia Iglesias

Jaime Garcia-Iglesias (he/him) is sociologist and a Chancellor’s Fellow in Centre for Biomedicine, Self and Society; Usher Institute. He holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Manchester and a MA in Critical Theory from the University of Nottingham. Jaime’s work spans the sociology of health and illness, public health, sexuality, and digital technology: he has worked extensively on sexual health and its social impacts among men who have sex with men, particularly in relation to HIV and Mpox. He also works across sociology, history, and queer studies. He has written about the cultural and social lives of viruses, the role of internet in intimate lives, and experiences of desire and sexual satisfaction in relation to health.

Key research interests include:

  • Public health and critical public health (particularly in relation to gender and sexual minorities)
  • Sociology of health and illness (notably in relation to HIV, sexual health, and reproductive health)
  • Digital technology and health (including anonymity, dating apps, and online/offline practices)

Current and notable research projects/ publications:

  • Dating App Connections” project, exploring the impacts of dating apps during COVID-19 lockdowns in the intimate practices and wellbeing of heterosexual and LGBT+ people.
  • Mpox Stage I and II projects, evaluating the UK response to the 2022 Mpox outbreak and dynamics of collaboration and community activism.
  • The adaptation of the COVID-VA tool to qualitatively capture the experiences of vulnerability of male, street, sex workers in the UK
