Welcome back!

By

Welcome back to the new term! Today was the first teaching day for many of us and at 9 am this morning we enjoyed seeing 250 students eager to learn about gender on their very first day in college at the first class of Understanding Gender in the Contemporary World!

For the GENDER.ED team our summer was busy with research, rest time, and some exciting planning and preparation for the new year. Over the summer we hosted an event at the Edinburgh International Book Festival at the newly opened Edinburgh Futures Institute. The event was "Beautiful Rebellion" featuring a conversation with authors Jill Burke (from the Uni of Edinburgh), Emma Dabiri and Moshtari Hilal. At a reception following the event, our audience got to meet and interact with the authors, hear about GENDER.ED's work, and chat over refreshments accompanied by a live band playing in the corner. It was an event with critical conversation around ideals and rebellions around beauty standards and regimes, and histories of gendered and racialized bodies. We'll hear more from the author in blog posts over this term!

We hope you will join us at our Welcome Reception on October 1, more details here: https://www.gender.ed.ac.uk
