Learning, Teaching and Curriculum

As part of GENDER.ED’s mission, we support and promote excellence in learning and teaching on gender and sexualities studies. We highlight current courses and identify gaps in provision, working with colleagues to build new capacity for an inclusive curriculum.

Our flagship foundational course is the cross-university pre-honours undergraduate module Understanding Gender in the Contemporary World (led by SPS) launched in 2016 (founding convenor Dr Meryl Kenny).

We also promote ‘Introduction to Queer Studies’ led by Edinburgh College of Art – another foundational course for undergraduates. This was launched in 2018 (Convenor Dr Glyn Davis).

GENDER.ED has facilitated the development of a third interdisciplinary undergraduate course on Gender and Visual Cultures led by the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures (Prof Nacim Pak-Shiraz and Dr Idil Akinci) which has been approved for delivery in 2021-22.

We have also advised RACE.ED  – the university’s new cross-university initiative on race, racialisation and decolonial studies – on the development of the introductory course ‘Understanding Race and Colonialism’.

Visit the GENDER.ED Directory for details of other gender and sexualities courses across the University at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
