GENDER.ED’s statement on the overturning of Roe v Wade

We at GENDER.ED are greatly disturbed by the US Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v Wade and remove the constitutional right to abortion. The ruling will disproportionately affect those who are racially and economically marginalised, and sets a dangerous precedent for the future of women’s and minority rights and reproductive freedom globally. GENDER.ED further recognises the dangerous potential of this judgment in its challenge to additional progress made towards equality, including its ramifications on the right to equal marriage and access to contraception. We strongly maintain that reproductive health and access to abortion care are fundamental human rights and constitute essential healthcare. GENDER.ED deplores restrictions on reproductive autonomy, and condemns this decision by the US Supreme Court.
